Just like anything, with proper maintenance practices, the battery life of Decent e-scooters can be drastically improved. Due to the slightly fickle nature of Lithium batteries, they do need to be kept within optimal conditions in order for the user to attain the best performance that they can from their Decent electric scooter.
What do I need to know?
- Battery should be charged before first use.
- Battery should ideally be stored at a temperature between 5-10°C if possible, however, room temperature is also suitable.
- When charging, it is best to keep the battery at room temperature and to allow it to settle after use before charging.
- We would advise for the battery to be removed from the device after any use to prevent any unwanted discharge.
Can I use my battery straight out of the box?
Straight out of the box, the battery of the Decent X7/One/One max will be charged with a 'storage charge'. We won't get into this too deeply as this has been discussed in one of our other articles which can be found here, however, the basic crux is that the batteries are charged with a certain voltage suitable for long term storage, however, this voltage is not suitable for use within your scooter. Before taking the scooter out for the first time, we would highly recommend for the battery to be charged fully.
The first charging cycle is highly decisive. We can't reiterate this point enough as this will calibrate your scooter to the battery that is being used. If this step isn't done correctly, your device may not accurately recognise the true Ah rating that your battery is charged to.
What temperature should my battery be stored at?
The Lithium batteries of the Decent range of scooters can be stored anywhere between 0°C-40°C, however, the most ideal temperatures for these batteries to be stored at is between 5°C-10°C to reach the most optimal capacities. In reality, we can understand that these temperatures are quite inconvenient to maintain (especially in the hot summer months) so we would really advise for these batteries to be kept at a room temperature; this shouldn't cause any perceptible problems for yourself.
Temperatures below 0°C and above 40°C can damage the capacity of your batteries permanently so we would advise for these batteries to be stored somewhere warm during the winter and somewhere out of direct sunlight in the summer.
What temperature should I charge my battery at?
Thankfully, the ideal charging conditions are a little more lenient and forgiving compared to the storage conditions. Room temperature is really the optimal temperature for these batteries to be charged at. One thing that we would like to note, however, is that these batteries should be given time to warm up (or cool down) before charging them again. This is only really a consideration if you have just come back from a journey and would like to charge the battery up again right away.
Is there anything else that I need to know when charging my battery?
To be honest, there are only much smaller things which we would advise. These are far from decisive, however, every little helps.
With Lithium batteries, it can be highly detrimental for them to be discharged below their nominal voltage. This can happen when the battery is continually used following warnings from the device, or by leaving the battery attached to the device for a prolonged period of time. The Decent X7/One/One Max does have a feature which does help prevent the battery from discharging when left in the device, however, this won't be 100% efficient so it still would be best to remove the battery after every use.
